Shorinjiryu Training Camp 2006 2 replies

Australian Shorinjiryu KaratedoOver the weekend of 18-19 March, Sensei Mark and I travelled to Brisbane to participate in the National Training Camp of Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo. This year’s camp was attended by instructors and members of all 9 dojos - Kensuukan (Coonabarabran), Seiryukan (Brisbane), Torakai/Torakan (Logan City), Kensuikai (Innisfail), Yagizakai (Rockhampton), Shishikai (Brisbane), Seiryukai (Brisbane) and Kengokai (Sydney).

The Saturday kicked off with a welcome from our Chief Instructors, Renshi Jim Griffin, 5th Dan and Renshi Max Estens, 5th Dan, followed by a warm up.

Then Tashi Anne Aylward (Torakai/Torakan) covered grappling with 2 opponents, based on the Sannin Kumite exercises. After this Tashi Graeme Bowden (Kensuukan) covered fighting strategy.

Following lunch, Renshi Jim and Tashi Lesley Griffin taught Naihanchin Waza, a 2 person drill based on the Naihanchin kata. The day was rounded out with an informative lesson on ground fighting and self defences from Tashi Peter Deasy (Kensuikai).

On Sunday, Sensei Mark and I taught an early morning session on Bojutsu, including preparatory exercises (junbi undo) and the first segment of the Gorin no Kumibo drill. After breakfast and warm up, we were joined by the Patron of Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo, Shihan Phil Hooper, 7th Dan.

The first session was a run through by Sensei Mark and I on Kata Bunkai Drills, utilising the Tsuki Waza drill as a foundation, before working some self defence segments directly from 3 of the kata - Ananku, Naihanchin and Nijushiho.

After a break, Renshi Max Estens taught the A, B, C, D & E’s of joint locking - a comprehensive drill regarding various locks and holds.

After lunch we moved onto a grading for 9 candidates attempting to progress to various black belt levels. The following 9 people were successful in their endeavours:

Promoted to Shodan-Ho (Probationary Black Belt)

Promoted to Shodan (1st Dan Black Belt)

Promoted to Nidan (2nd Dan Black Belt)

Congratulations to all for your efforts and results.

Advanced Training Camp and Grading - September 2005

This past weekend, Sensei Mark and I travelled up to Brisbane to participate in the Annual Advanced Training Camp of Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo, which was held in conjunction with the quarterly training day of the SE Qld dojos.

Black belts, and one brown belt, from Seiryukan (Brisbane), Torakai (Brisbane), Yagizakai (Rockhampton) and Kengokai (Sydney) were attendance for the 2 days, and were joined by a large group of kyu grade students on the Sunday, all from Seiryukan and Torakai.

On the Saturday we covered the jo kata Ufuchiku no Jo, as well as the Renzoku Kogeki training drills.  Sensei Lesley also took us all through the kata Sankakutobi.

On the Sunday we covered a new kata, Naihanchin Sho, and in groups of 4, the students worked through the applications of this kata.  Meanwhile, many of the advanced members revised both Sankakutobi and Ufuchiku no Jo.

In the afternoon, we covered the Renzoku Kogeki Te Waza, and after lunch moved into the formal part of the afternoon.  This commenced with presentation of certificates and belts to four of our newest Shodan recipients – Sensei Tony Fletcher, Sensei Matthew Schultz, Sensei Kyran Findlater and Sensei Mathia Matakovic, all from the Torakai Dojo.  Each of these new shodans then did a demonstration kata.

Following this a small kyu grading was held, with Amanda Bugden from Seiryukan being promoted to 1st Kyu, and Tu from Torakai being promoted to 7th Kyu.

A special feature of the weekend was the awarding of the innaugural Black Belt of the Year Award.  A perpetual trophy will be awarded each year, with a plaque to each recipient.  Following a process of nomination and consultation among the senior instructors, Sensei Lesley Griffin was the very deserving winner of the inaugural award.

Thanks to Shihan Jim Griffin and Sensei Lesley Griffin for organising this weekend.

On Sunday 27 February, members of the NSW group of the Australian Shorinjiryu Karatedo Association got together in Coonabarabran for a training session and grading.

Coona Training Camp & Grading 27 Feb 05

It was a pleasure for me to attend this session, and to meet with and train with a great group of people from Coona.

We covered off Bojutsu “Junbi Undo” (preparatory exercises), and moved into 2 of the randori from Gorin no Bo series.

After lunch, a grading was held, where Renshi Max Estens, Tashi Graeme Bowden and I put the candidates through a session that covered off on all material for the grade being attempted, and all lower grades.

After deliberation, the following promotions were announced

Congratulations to all on their successful promotions.
